Thank you Dr. Bob, I was wondering exactly how that false trail was made, we
helped make it even more obvious by taking that trail down, down, down
ourselves.
And since we are going to do the very same one again this year on a
different trek, it really means a lot to me to get that kind of information.

Subject: [Philmont]: Bear and Black Mountains
I hope this comes across OK via straight email, since attachments don't
work. This is an approximate schematic of the trail situation on top of
Black Mountain, showing the problem area:
^ North towards Bear Mountain
* |

*
*
In 2000, there was a ---> *********************************
post, but no sign * Shaefers Peak Ridgeline
attached. * Trail - very obvious.
*
* East towards
* the Pass & ToT --->
*
* *
* * <--- Prominent side trail just east
"Everest" Sign & * * of the peak
Black Mountain Peak --> *BM *
*************** *****************
<--- Trail to Black False Trail east and sharply down;
Mountain Camp very prominent
So you can see that the problem area is just east of the Black Mountain
peak. Crews coming from Bear Mountain will have no difficulty finding
the Shaefers Pass/ToT trail. However, Crews coming from Bear Mountain
and heading towards Black Mountain Camp, or Crews coming from Black
Mountain Camp and heading towards Shaefers Pass/ToT, can get fooled by
the side trail just on the eastern side of the Black Mountain peak. So
many Crews have made this mistake that there is now an actual trail,
which turns east and drops like a rock off the east end of Black
Mountain. You don't realize you went bad until you're way down the side
of the mountain, and the "trail" finally disappears. I hope this helps
people avoid this error.
