Hi, My son's going not me, but I have plantar facitis, and my foot doctor
told me NOT to wear Walking shoes, but to wear running shoes because of how
it supports the foot. This alone made a lot of difference to me--along with
the stretching exercises.
I got insoles from my doctor which I wear all the time, and could wear
inside hiking boots. They aren't real expensive, I've had them a couple of
years so I don't remember.
My son also has flat feet (which leads to plantar facitis) and we got
insoles for his hiking boots at the running store. They seem to be working.
He is a distance runner and wears running shoes that stabalize the
foot--look for one that says corrects pronating (sp?). The information I've
read says you don't want shoes that cushion, (the shoes with cushioning may
aggrevate the problem) ?but ones that have stabalizers that correct
pronating.
Also, look for shoes with a straight lath--when you look at the bottom of
the shoe, it should be a straight line from heel to toe--most running shoes
to this to some extent. If you look at a variety of shoes you will see many
that the toe curves in--this will aggrevate the problem.
May be way more info than you need, but hope it helps!
PS, if it's bad because of extra training you may ask you doctor if he'll
give you a short dose of steriods (Prednisone/Medrol). I had poison ivy one
summer (when I had aggravated my foot by stepping on a shell at the beach)
and when I took a Medrol Dosepak for the poison ivy my foot quit hurting.
I'm a pharmacist and should have been able to figure this out for myself,
but I was shocked at how much my foot improved--I probably wouldn't take an
injection for it, but the Medrol Dosepak may be worth a try.
Sharon
