I posted this on Scouts-L earlier today and thought it
might also be of interest to those going to Philmont
this summer.

*********

Yesterday, I attended a ceremony at the local high
school during which two young men from our troop
received a Congressional Award. One received a Bronze
Award while the other received a Silver Award.

For additional information on this program, see:
<http://www.congressionalaward.org/>

Both of these young men used their scouting activities
for most of the award requirements.

The Bronze Award recipient used his service as den chief
and troop guide for his Voluntary Public Service. He
earned eleven merit badges to satisfy the Personal
Development requirement. His Physical Fitness
requirement was satisfied through an off-season high
school football program. His expedition was a
backpacking and white water rafting trip at the Packard
High Adventure base in Colorado. The young man is now
working on the Silver Award.

The Silver Award recipient served as a volunteer during
our council's winter camp, took part in Order of the
Arrow service projects and served as an instructor
during Philmont's National Junior Leader Instructor Camp
for his Voluntary Public Service. His Physical Fitness
requirement was met through his high school tennis team.
His Personal Development activities included taking part
in several scouting related training conferences. His
expedition was taking part in Philmont's Rayado program.
By the way, this 19 year old young man has completed the
requirements for the Gold Congressional Award and will
receive his award during a June ceremony in Washington
D.C.

I've been a Congressional Award advisor for over ten
years. This is an outstanding program for young people
ages 14-23. Scouting activities may be used to satisfy
many of the requirements but the young person must first
register and then establish goals which must be approved
by an advisor. Check the program out for the youngsters
in your scouting unit.
