Kevin
Thanks for your perspective on the caterpillar method. I agree that if crew
member step off the trail during the caterpillar, that they can damage the
environment. However, most trails that I have been on at Philmont, where we
needed to do the caterpillar, were wide enough to allow the person stepping
out of the way of the crew to remain on the tred portion of the trail. In
addition, the caterpillar keeps the crew together during difficult climbs and
allows them to take a break while standing on the trail. I have seen lots of
crews that get winded going uphill and take breaks off the trail.
I am a big believer in Leave No Trace and a majority of our crew are
certified LNT trainers. We recognize that everything we do in the
backcountry has an impact, whether in washing dishes, setting up a campsite
or digging a cat hole. It is our job is to minimize that impact.
