I've been at the Ranch for July 4th for our past 2 treks. At
some of the larger camps there may be a special program for
that day. At Beaubien there is usually a festival going on with crew competitions (stump tossing, 3 legged races, etc.).
Other programs may be impacted if the staff have taken off to
catch the rodeo in Cimarron. In '99 the cons guys took off
for the day from Beaubien without arranging for someone to
fill in for them. By the time the head cons guy got to the
site from CHQ, there was only time for his speech before he let all the crews go. The boys referred to that as their Philmont conversation project.
There are fireworks displayed in both Cimarron and Eagle's
Nest in the evening (check web pages for exact times). I've
heard that you can see the Cimarron show from some of the
campsites at Harlan. The Eagle's Nest display can be viewed
from several places. One is from the saddle between Phillips and Tolby above Clear Creek Camp. I suppose those on Phillips could also see them. The real party spot for the
Eagle's Nest display is on top of Baldy. Last summer there
were probably 100 people up there (mostly OA trail crew and
Rayado crews).
I don't remember how we got down, since night hiking is
verboten:-(
When this topic was discussed last year on the list, several
people remarked how the best celestial displays, available
practically every day at Philmont, are the sunsets.
