Good point and item for discussion. I was just about to put out an
unsolicited message about this very subject.

We found a good and inexpensive method to provide everyone in the crew with
a map. I downloaded the maps from the Philmont site and then took the six
ones we need for our trek. Using a graphic print shop software, like
Corel's Print House, I made a template of magnetic grid lines that were
spaced one mile apart. This will make it easier for the boys to work the
compasses.

After overlaying the template to each map I put a dark circle around each
camp we will be staying at as well as any other points of interest. This
makes it easier to find the locations on the maps. The maps were printed on
an inkjet printer using Photo glossy inkjet paper which can be bought at
Staples for $25.00for 100 sheets and they usually have $10 off of $40
purchase coupons. I buy inkjet cartridges from 123inkjet.com for $7 each.
The whole process used a couple of cartridges but it is worth it.

We used clear contact paper to laminate two maps back to back. Each set now
consists of three sheets that are only about 7" x7" which makes them easy to
use. The Naviguesser uses the one set of crew section maps for the days
travels and then writes the daily entry in the Crew Journal each night since
he is most familiar with the route taken.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [Philmont]: Maps??

The Philmont guide recommends the each hiker should have a map. Do you
experienced trekkers order sectional maps for each? We are doing Trek 5, so
that would mean we would need Central and Southern sectionals for 23 hikers
at $5.00 a map. There must be a better way. DO you put the maps together
and photo copy just the areas that your trek covers or do you get the large
map for each hiker and just a couple of the sectionals? Also how are you
protecting the maps, do any of you use waterproofing spray on the maps?
