Tom Fitzpatrick asks...
Could someone please explain to me why the rush to obtain Philmont maps? Our
two crews have a short trek, so our route will be planned on the day we arrive
at base camp. I like the fact that we don't have to be planning each
days hike, months in advance. Is it safe to assume that Philmont will provide
a sufficient number of maps to cover our journey? I'm not seeing anything in
the piles of Philmont paperwork that says we will need to provide our own maps.
Comments...
Philmont supplies one overall map to the normal summer trek crews, and I don't
know why it would be any different for short treks, so you need to plan on buying
at least two of whichever Sectional maps cover your route.
Since you will not know what your route is before you arrive, it seems to me
that it is even more important for your crew to obtain and study the maps (unless
of course everyone in the crew has been to Philmont before and understands what
is in the backcountry and how the program works) in order to make informed decisions
when you arrive and plan your route. Things like where are the camps that offer
the programs that the crew really wants to do, what is near those camps, what
is near the peaks you want to do.
Getting through the check-in process at Base Camp makes for a busy day - I would
not want to add to that making basic decisions regarding route and program that
could have been reviewed before arrival.
