Couple of points here:
1) I was asking about the Philmont Training Center not the backcountry
2) Bring a cell phone on your trek and keep it
off (save your battery)!
I know a crew who had an adult who had a heart attack
when they were on the last day of their trek and on
the Tooth of Time ridge and got a signal.
Luckily they had a cell phone
and called for help. They had all kinds of help very
quickly (relatively speaking)...the rangers were
on horseback on their way up the ridge and caught up with the
2 Scouts running down the trail about 1/3rd of the way down.
(this was back in '00 )
