We used Tyvek for our ground tarps and it works just fine. You can use
double-back tape to seam sections together if you have to. Ours was bought
from Into-The-Wind and we also ordered their double back tape. Its only
1/4" wide.
For our dinning fly we bought some Silicon impregnated Rip-stop nylon
(Sil-Net) and sewed up our own fly. No grommets used on the edges. Instead
we created nylon loops out of some of the material and cross stitched them
into the fly. Believe me, we tested it by hanging over 300 lbs. off the
loops. They are not going to rip out or through like grommets. Our fly
measured in at 12' 6"L x 14' 8W" when we were done. Material came in 5'
wide rolls. The only grommets we have are at the peaks to pass the
parachute rope through and larks-head knot. The stuff is very slippery to
work with and finding the right needle and sewing settings to use with the
nylon thread took awhile to find using practice material. Seams are
blue-jean type seams.
Total weight for the fly alone was 1lb 10oz.
Our poles are hiking staffs that can be screwed together if we want more
than 5' in height.
Rope is parachute cord.
Stakes are 9" aluminum twisted shank. The twisted shank and extra length
gave us better grip in soft soils and also made them stronger for hard soil.
Setting it up in a 35 mph wind was interesting for two people, but
manageable.
We ordered extra material and made stuff sacks out of it. Very, very water
resistant and light weight. I'd say water proof, but you can't close the
top of a stuff sack off and call it water proof. It also makes great bear
bags. Water resistant and can withstand a lot of heavy weight in the bag
for hanging.
