It is ten hours per person. As noted on the sheet you will receive as you
check out of Philmont (The saddest day of the year) that each person has
completed three hours of work. Each person must then complete and
additional seven hours of service back home to complete the 50 miler.
Then if you are smart, or the scouts are, if you do your service after
completing Philmont you can take credit for the inspiration given you by the
program at Philmont and submit your request for the S.C.E.N.E. award. This
is an International Award. It is authorized by the World Organization for
the Scouting Movement (WOSM) (www.scout.org). Every Scout who completes a
Philmont Trek has begun earning this award. However, usually less than 1000
participants (of the almost 20,000 who trek at Philmont each summer) submit
the completed form for the award. And the patches are free!!!!!
So think about it - Earn your 50 miler and your S.C.E.N.E. Award by doing
your service project after completing your Philmont Trek!!!! My 1997 and
2000 crews did this. It provides a great incentive for a crew reunion, too.
We did our 2000 post trek trail project all day at our council camp then
adjourned to a Scout's home where his Mom had homemade lasagna for us and we
swapped pictures and stories all evening!!!
And that crew will have eight of eight Eagles by this Fall!!! 11 people
from 7 different troops!! (8 Scouts + 3 Scouters)
