To the Philmont List -
Sorry, but I can't find the award either now. I know I saw it there once.
Here is some more info -
S.C.E.N.E. is Scout Centres of Excellence for Nature and the Environment. I
did a search on the WOSM homepage (www.scout.org) for SCENE and got a page
describing the international program and listing designated "centres" in
several countries but nothing about the award. If you searched you probably
found the same thing. This Fact Sheet can be located by clicking in the
left hand margin - Organizations, then Fact Sheets, then scrolling to the
SCENES fact Sheet and clicking it. Interesting though, they only list Sea
Base not Philmont or Canoe Base. Previously, I think I saw all three. I'll
have to find out. I sent an E-mail to Philmont Logistics about their
participation in S.C.E.N.E., will post response when I get it.
If Philmont is still participating, when you check out after completing your
trek (or Sea Base or Canoe Base) you will be given many papers.
One is a certification for the 50 miler award saying you hiked 50 miles and
did 3 hours trail work.
Another is an application for the S.C.E.N.E. award. This sheet is the only
place I know that has the requirements. Essentially the only requirement
you will not have completed when you leave Philmont is to go back home and
using the skills you learned complete another project. (Time (either how
many hours or within how many months) is not specified)
Once the project is completed, you complete the form given you at Philmont.
List names of those completing the at home project and what your project was
and mail it back to Philmont. A few weeks later your patches (and
certificate(?)) appear. No charge. I have done this twice after my 1997
and 2000 treks. And I know I saved copies of the form but can't find them
tonight.
Uh-Oh, here comes a "Scouter Story" - In 2000 we had a helper on our back
home project. A retired Professional Scouter with over 70 years continuous
registration. Still spry and active. He was in an experimental Cub Scout
pack when BSA was first exploring the idea of Cub Scouts. He shook
Baden-Powell's hand at a Scouting Jamboree in Canada. B-P picked him out of
the crowd because he had his BSA uniform on not his Canadian uniform. He
was registered in BSA (in Vermont) and Canada and earned his King Scout and
Eagle Scout. He started a Boy Scout troop in North Africa when stationed
there during the war. Recently he earned the highest level of Hornaday
Award and was National Park service volunteer of the year for his work for
many years at Acadia National Park. When younger and both as a professional
and a volunteer, he was an advisor for several Philmont Treks. Anyway, I
documented his help and his Philmont treks and he, too, received a
S.C.E.N.E. Award from Philmont with us in 2000.

Do you have more info on the S.C.E.N.E award? I've been bumbling around
on the WOSM site, but not finding anything -- my French isn't too good
