There is a shortage of tetanus vaccine since the heavy demand for it after
9-11. It's not that the country has run out, it's just in low supply
temporarily. Philmont requires a tetanus shot/booster within the last ten
years. Has anybody experienced difficulty in getting their crews immunized?
Comment...
Believe there was a posting on this issue some time ago, and the bottom line
was that Philmont is aware of the problem and will waive the requirement,
since they have a supply for use in emergency situations. That was also
exactly the answer we got from Sea Base two months ago for one crew member
who's shot was more than ten year old. However, if that is your situation,
I would call and discuss it with the Philmont medical people now, not when
you arrive.
And by the way, the leader who had the problem was told the low supply had
nothing to do with 9-11, but rather a changeover in manufacturers. In any
event, tetanus shots are presently being reserved for actual injuries, not
preventative shots prior to an injury. I do not know when that situation is
expected to be corrected.
