We are also going in 2003. Our first practice hike had 2 scouts and all of the adults scheduled to go missing. (I am practicing with them, but not going on that trek.) When I set the budget, I built the food costs for the practice hikes into the budget. So everyone pays through their quarterly payments if they show or not. This is the second time a crew from our troop will be heading out to Philmont. (Not part of a council contingent). We went in 2001, and are now going in 2003 and thought we had all of our bases covered for planning, expectations etc. Last year we had no problems, everyone showed up for everything when they were supposed to and that was that. Our first weekend shakedown trip begins tonight. The dates have been scheduled since February (yes, we're starting extra early for 2003) but with only 18 hours notice, two of the four new boys (the other 4 went in 2001) on the crew have backed out of this weekend trip. I know that school work is major this time of year for ALL of the boys, but my concern is more with the attitude of not making it a priority, and their missing out on the beginnings of working together as a crew. There is also the financial part -- the food has been purchased and re-packed into 4-man packs, much like Philmont does it. I assume we should expect them to pay anyway? The other leaders and myself are rather frustrated with all of this. Does anyone have any suggestions? I thought the expectation to participate was a given, but I don't want to be too harsh either as it's still early. Also, if this is not the right forum for this kind of question, will someone please let me know? I've only been part of it for a few months.
