All,
I resisted buying into a cell phone for years, caving only a month
ago. It's convenient in the city but totally useless in the
backcountry. Adult advisors in particular have enough stress as it is
"back home" - why keep a symbol of that stress with you on the trail?
Here's a great option: Teach your scouts Radio merit badge, and have
them sit the amateur radio exam. You're much more likely to
successfully work a radio contact in the backcountry (not just at
Philmont) and surprise, surprise - your scouts will learn something
about different communications methods.
Just a thought.
