Two thoughts on this (not judging but thinking out loud). Remember the
general rule about nothing after late afternoon as far as smellables being
applied to one's body. Bill obviously survived with no incidents but as I
recall those wipes have a pretty good scent and could be a bear attraction.
I'm a big believer in keeping trash to a bare/bear minimum :). Remember that
every ounce of backcountry trash must be packed out, mostly by staff members
and Philmont already provides us with enough trash as it is. One person
using wipes is no big deal (perhaps 2/day) but 12 people x 50 or so crews
would really add up. Yea, I know that isn't the reality but it just goes
along with LNT ethics. If everyone picked up a stone from the top of Baldy
to take home as a souvenir there'd be a big hole in the ground there by now!
I routinely teach Scouts to use the bottom 4-5 inch section of a milk jug.
It can be packed in the pack and hold items or can be slipped over the end
of your ground pad and it weighs nothing. I personally use one of the
collapsible dog dishes but I like to teach the kids to be thrifty and I'd
rather see them spend the bucks on a decent sleeping bag or boots that are
high quality. After that it's all just window dressing. Think light, think
cheap.
