I used Ziplock Heavy Duty 2 1/4 gallon Bib Bags that I bought at Walmart for
this purpose. I found them to be very handy as a was bucket and for
laundry. They have a pleated bottom and stand up easily. I highly
recommend them. The ones I used (2) are still usable and will be going on
future hikes with me.
They came in a bag of 8 bags, I found the in the camping/fishing dept. I
don't remember how much the cost but I don't believe it was that much.

Has anybody tried using a gallon size plastic zip-lock bag for this
purpose? We have family/friends in both the Army and Marines in Iraq and
that's what they used them for. Just wondering....

Yes. This method works fine. At our Patriots' Path Council training
weekend for our Philmont crews, we demonstrate it and call it the
"Philmont Washing Machine."
