Subject: Re: [Philmont]: Cell Phones at Philmont
Ed, the coverage is pretty poor once you get into the mountains on your
trek. One of our crew members was the CEO for a major corporation, and he
tried to stay in tuoch via cell phone. He was dispointed to find out how
poor the coverage was in the south and central country. When we were up
high on Mt Phillips, he had pretty good service. When we were in valleys
and other areas below the treeline, coverage was so spotty he just gave up
trying to callout. Your ranger will discuss emergency procedures with you
in case of an emergency. Every day, keep track of the nearest staffed camp,
as they are there to assist you. We medevaced one leader during our trek
with almost no problems. We worked together as a team and transported him
to a staffed camp. They transported him to base, and had him back on the
trail quickly after treating him.

For emergency situations, what type of cellphone coverage can be expected at
Philmont? Is it worth carrying a cellphone for emergency purposes only?
thanks,
