Bruce writes....
One interesting note...Although I am in shape, my crew "keeps down" with the
slowest member. I cannot, nor would I, try to keep up with 14-18 year-olds.
My first trek ('93) our teens kept racing ahead and waiting. When we
finally would catch up they would take off again. No fun.
Comment...
At the Patriots' Path Council training weekend for our Philmont crews (this
year's was last weekend), we have several short sessions on hiking and
hiking skills. A common thread through them is that "hiking is a team
sport". The crew hikes together, single file, nicely spaced apart, youth in
the front and Advisors in the rear.
If a gap opens in the line, the crew member at the back of the gap is moving
slower than those in front of it, and the Crew Leader moves that person to
be first in line - he is now setting the pace for the crew. The next time a
gap opens (and it will, because the same person is not the slowest ALL the
time unless you have a crew member totally unprepared to be on the trail),
the procedure is repeated.
Having part of the crew race out in front is a recipe for disaster.
P.S. Glad to see you're back John, but sorry to hear it sounds like you
have swapped one computer problem for another....
