OK, I have had enough of you guys talking about me!! All this stuff about
Type A, "Idiot" ASMs, the ASM that knows the right way!!! I have had it!!
I confess, I am all those things!!!
As they say, seeing the problem is the first step in recovery!! LOL
My 2 cents. I honestly do have to watch myself. I am over bearing, pushy
and I definitely know the right way to do things. It must come from 21
years in the military! Anyway, I do believe that on our weekend outings,
that is the place of the leader - training. I have no problem showing a
scout the right way to set up camp, cook a meal, start a fire, etc. I
believe that is responsibility of the leaders. Then, on the summer trips,
that is the time for the scouts to do their thing and to find what works for
them.
We did a week in the BWAC this summer. The scouts were responsible for meal
planning, purchasing, repackaging, gear selection, etc. They did great
keeping the price to $175 per scout! We were really impressed! And, all
took turns cooking, were responsible for setting up camp, filtering water
(sorry John, I just can't handle iodine, halizone, whatever anymore LOL).
It is very rewarding to see them step up and play with what works for them.
As for Philmont, it is my goal to be on vacation! My partner does a pretty
good job of telling me to shut my mouth and I am sure my son will put me in
my place! LOL The scouts certainly have earned the right to experience
their trek.
As a side note, we are getting "T" shirts made and I have found a great
source for"dri-release" Ts that are wicking shirts that are quick drying, a
85% poly, 15% cotton blend. I was quoted a price of $13 per shirt including
a 4-color screened logo. The minimum order is 24 shirts with a $10 setup
fee for the screening and $2 extra for 2x shirts. I think it is a pretty
good price. Here is a link to their site. If you want my rep, contact me
off line.
