Hi. My name's Robert, and I'm a recovering type-A leader.

I've kept my mouth shut on outings now for about a year. The closest
I ever come to giving suggestions, is asking pointed questions about
methods.

and I admit, I joined this list months before my troop had a trek, so that
I could learn all there was to learn about philmont, and know everything
when we got there. Now of course, I know everything (yeah right) Including
that I really should keep my mouth shut. Tight. especially at philmont.

on local outings, I continue to ask questions of the scouts once in a while,
but I spend most of my time wrangling adults. I try to explain to the adults
that come camping with us that we adults are not adult boy scouts. We are
not there to make sure they do everything right. We are not there to be
momies and daddies. If they're interferring too much I simply say "Hey Dad..."
(or mom) and they usually get the point.

training philosophies

Our training hikes for philmont are goign to be interesting. I'm planning
on briefing them on what I've learned here as the "near-philmont" way and
seeing how they execute. The whole while explaining that the rangers will
explain the real way, but "I think this is close".

I'm finding a few different places for practice hikes. I'm looking for
someplace to do a 1-day trip (hike out, set up camp, cook a dinner at lunch
time, clean up, strike camp, hike back), a medium length hike weekend trip
(harder terrain, tire them out and see how they perform a little worn out, and
a long-hike weekend trip (flat terrain, but about a 13mi hike with a lunch
in the middle). Distances for these three I'm looking for about 5mi - medium
terrain, 8-10mi harder terrain but 2 days to do it in, and 10-15mi flat
terrain all one day (overnights at each end).

I'd welcome suggestions/criticisms on the above training ideas.

(and no, I'm not starting late, we've got 13months left)
