one member of the list has suggested that lnt does not apply at philmont. as a lnt trainer who took training at ptc, my comment is that this member (and probably many others) does not understand lnt. lnt is an outdoor ethics program designed to encourage appropriate choices based on the particular conditions of the out of doors venue. lnt principles are equally applicable in a city park and in the valle. knowing what conduct is appropriate in a highly impacted campsite, such as those at philmont, and in a pristine back country camp that will be used (hopefully) only once is part of the program. the conduct is not the same in each case. we have choices to make. lnt principles are designed to encourage choices that minimize human impact. these choices include limiting the spread of impacts that have already begun. lnt principles guide the choices made in each case. how many meadows at philmont have multiple, parallel trails crossing them because too many crews did not want to get their waterproof boots muddy? is there any philmont adviser who approves of cutting switch backs? every adventure out of doors is an opportunity for practicing lnt principles. the rangers do a terrific job of teaching lnt principles, whether knowingly or unknowingly. in fact, i cannot think of a single one of the 7 principles our rangers have not cover in a manner that is philmont appropriate. and, they never mentioned, to my recollection, leave no trace. i highly recommend the lnt course at ptc for those who would like to learn what it is all about and have a terrific experience in the process. jackson morris
