RE: [Philmont]: Changes in trek lottery coming?

As a member of the Executive Committee of the Philmont Staff Association and an
attendee at the most recent Ranch Committee meeting at Philmont, I can confirm
that the below is true. No longer will you have to have a great number of
callers giving up a Saturday in October/November only to, perhaps, not ever get
through to the call center.

The procedure, AS IT STANDS RIGHT NOW, it to be as follows:

*Each unit will go to a web page to register for the dates that they want.
There will be a window of time to do this - perhaps as long as 60 days. Those
who register on the first day will have just as good a chance as those that
register on the last day.

*Only one entry per unit -- duplicates will be thrown out after the close of the
registration period.

*After registration has closed, the software program will assign each unit that
has registered a RANDOM number from 1 to XXXXXX (the number of units
registered). Starting with number 1, that unit will be assigned to their first
date choice, etc.... If a unit has number of (example) 500 and they only chose
an arrival date of 07/23 and that date is full, that unit will be wait listed
and the next unit gets their shot at the date that they picked (Hint: Pick a
number of possible arrival dates to have a greater chance of getting an open
slot. However, now that the hint is out, everybody will pick 10-20 possible
arrival dates and the hint becomes mute....)

*After the software does its magic, all will be notified via email of where they
stand, i.e. arrival on X date or wait listed.

It is Philmont's attention to keep this first year as simple as possible with
new twists and turns to come in the years ahead. Please, please, please
understand that the procedures and parameters are still being discussed in
Administration and with the software company. Thus, do not call Philmont asking
for more info as they do not have it right now. Rather, watch the PSA Web Site
(www.philstaff.com) as we will post information as it becomes available.

The above information is communicated with the full authority of Mark Anderson,
Program Director, as it was given to me on April 26, 2003.

Subject: [Philmont]: Changes in trek lottery coming?

I received an email from a friend here in Houston whose troop is trying for
Philmont in 2004 or 2005. I thought I'd post an excerpt from his email as I
wonder if anyone else is in the "know" about changes in the lottery system.
Here is what my friend wrote me:

<To add to Dan's comments: I talked to Philmont yesterday, and the
procedure for the 2005 treks will change. Basically, they are going to a
Web-based entry system with a lottery to select the Crews/Troops that will
go on the 2005 treks. They are still debating the procedures and rules
(e.g., they haven't decided whether to exclude units that have gone on
treks in the past year or past 2 years), but they promise to have things
"nailed down" in July.>

The issue of the call in and it's fairness has come up here before and my
interest is not to just rehash this issue. Can anyone contribute to the
validity of the above excerpt?
