Excellent post Jason. Thank You.

In cased some missed it, one of the most important points of Jason's message was
at the very end - "Most of these programs do NOT fill up each year and some have
scholarships available." To the best of my knowledge, the Rayado / Kanik /
autumn adventure programs have NEVER filled up.

Subject: RE: [Philmont]: Changes in trek lottery coming?

I am glad to see that Philmont is now entering the technology age.

Don't forget for those who can't get in on the 10 day trek, there are
still lots of ways to get to Philmont

Rayado - 21 day trek for youth only. Ages 16-20. The most physically,
mentally, and challenging program Philmont has to offer. Very good for
older kids in the troop who want to challenge themselves. This program is
done on an individual basis, not unit level. Boys and Girls from all over
the nation are put into a crew and operate as a team for 21 days in the
backcountry. Each crew is assigned 2 veteran Rangers.

Mountain Man/Woman - 5 day trek for youth ages 14 - 20. Another individual
based program. Youth who are with adults attending PTC are given the
opportunity for these treks. Youth from all over the country are combined
into crews and assigned 2 veteran Rangers for 5 days in the backcountry.

OA Trail Crew - Not sure of the ages, but it is for youth in the OA. Cost
about $100 for a 2 week Philmont experience. 1 week of building trail and
1 week of a trek. Assigned 2 conservation foreman. Once again this is an
individual based trek, no units involved.

ROCS - Roving Outdoor Conservation School 21 day for youth, not sure of
the ages. Crews are combined from people all over the nation. The 2
conservation ROCS guides teach the youth about forest ecology, trail
building, and many other ecological topics.

Cavalcade - Philmont on horseback. That's about all I know about it.

Ranch Hands - Work at Philmont in the cattle department and earn yourself
a free cavalcade.

Autumn Adventure - Adults and youth may participate, but normally only
adults. Dates are from late August to the end of October (maybe early
November if you sweet talk them). You pay for each day you spend at
Philmont. One Autumn Adventure Guide who is a veteran Seasonal Philmont
Staffer (from any department) will accompany you on your trek. You hike to
any part of the ranch you want. Create your own trek, go to Fish camp and
fish for 4 days if you want, it's up to you. The weather is absolutely
perfect during this time of year and the Aspen trees are turning gold.

Kanik - Philmont's winter camping program. It starts in late December and
runs to the end of March. You pay for the number of days you want to
spend at Philmont. It does get cold. Staff present you with cold weather
camping skills before hitting the trail. You sleep in roofed housing while
in basecamp (usually just the first night) If there is snow, your crew
will be driven close to the camping area where you will X Country ski to
the campsite. Each crew will have a guide who is a veteran seasonal
Philmont staff member. If there is snow, your guide will teach you how to
build a snow shelter known as a quinsy and you can sleep in it (it stays
pretty toasty in there). You will have opportunity to X Country skii the
back country, take day hikes, and go sledding on the hills. Philmont will
provide almost all the equipment you need. Just provide your own long
underwear and some hiking boots. Ever seen Baldy covered with snow?

PTC - Philmont Training Center. National Training for Adults for the BSA
and Cub Scouts. Many different programs offered throughout the year.
Programs typically last one week each.

For more info on these programs contact Philmont

Most of these programs do NOT fill up each year and some have scholarships
available. So if you know a boy or girl who want to attend Philmont but
can't get past the monstrous waiting list, tell them to check it out
