I never said my way is better. I said I use chacos as my camp shoe when I
go backpacking locally. I'll let you know what I do at philmont. This will
be my first trip, so I don't have a "my way" for philmont yet.
I'd considered getting some nurses shoes from a local uniform store. They
weigh about 2oz each, and have excellent arch support, and have covered toes
for those of you who think your way is better. (and don't watch where you walk)
But I'm not sure how well they'd hold up as a backup pair of backpacking
shoes.
I'll probably end up getting a pair of Converse High-Tops. We've all seen
them. The classic thin walled canvas shoe. They're relatively light, and
fairly sturdy (and closed toed).

Maybe it was all the solo backpacking I did about 10yrs ago that got me
watching where I walk. Maybe it was the 2 years I went barefoot around
town (work, home, driving, the store, everything except movie theatres)
that got me watching where I walk. I don't know, but I do know what I'm
stepping on.
I've said before on this list that my ultimate camp shoe is bare feet,
but they make a sorry backup pair of backpacking shoes. (even with the
callouses I used to have)
