Re: [Philmont]: As it all draws near

To Roman and All Other 2003 Trekkers: Speaking for myself and all the
other "old hands" on the list, you're welcome. Since it was offered as
a compliment, I hope that I am considered to be among the incurably
psychotic.

But we all ask everyone who goes this summer not to just unsubscribe and
disappear off the list the day before you step on the plane, train, or
bus. Remember, the total operation of Philmont is a dynamic animal
indeed - things change every year, sometimes minor, sometimes major,
sometimes just a few, and sometimes a multitude. The validity of a lot
of the information we "old hands" have ever fades as Philmont drifts
further and further into our pasts - we stay on top of things by
listening most carefully to what everyone has to say when they return.
This "fresh" information is most valuable for those who are going later
in the upcoming season - but it's also very valuable for those of us who
have made Philmont an active part of our everyday lives, through this
listserver and through our various personal email interactions,
websites, and high adventure training courses. Staying current is how
"we" all are able to assist the next crop of trekkers - and as you have
all seen, we already have a good number of 2004 trekkers on board,
soaking it all up a year and half in advance of their own treks. This
is how you repay the List, by helping the next generation. If you
aren't careful, you may become psychotics yourselves!

So all of you about to head off to Scouting Paradise, remember those of
us who remain behind to toil - and dream....
