Another way to protect the toes is to get sandals 1 to 2 sizes larger (longer)
than you normally wear at home. This gives the toe of the sandal a kickplate
effect, in that it comes in contact with ground objects (roots, stones) and the
fleshy toe doesn't. I normally wear 9.5 size shoe, but 11 size sandals around
camp, almost always with socks on as well. Works for me.
