I had the pleasure of driving by Philmont and surveying the mountains that I
will be hiking in about 40 days from I-25 this past week. The snow appears
to be mostly gone from the central and southern parts of Philmont (might be
some left on Baldy, it was hard to tell), but the peaks in the North and
Valle areas and the Sangre De Cristos in general still have considerable
snow pack to melt.
Drought is a long-term issue, but this winter and spring had more regular
moisture than last year. This time, last year, we had several major fires
burning in the Southwest. We have nothing like that this year so far (and no
fire bans yet), but just wait a couple of months...
Here in Colorado, we have tons of snow still in the high backcountry. Our
troop battled large snow drifts on the trail this weekend at 8500 and 9000
foot elevations on the west side of the Front Range. It's been a good snow
year, but it'll take more to lift our drought restrictions.
