We did one of 3 shakedown backpacking trips two weekends ago in Sunol,
California along a trail called the Ohlones Regional Wilderness Trail. It
was a short 21-miler - 1 nighter, but the elevation was challenging (3,200
feet up and 3,000 down). It rained all weekend so I figure that we got a
taste of the Philmont experience and then some. All scouts and scouters
survived and seemed to have a great time. We learned that some of our gear
needed a little rain-proofing, that some scouts (and scouters) will need to
keep up our exercise programs to keep up with the group, and that you really
can ski in the mud if you get forward on those boots enough and use those
treking poles properly - ha! We learned how to pitch a dining fly fast in
the rain but we did not work on our bear bag hanging skills - will leave
that for our next trip. I fully expect that whatever we don't master
ourselves before the outing will be covered by our ranger once we get there.
