When we were at Northern Tier in June we had quite a problem with
bugs....it was really tough to enjoy a sunset or a little quiet time in the
evenings without headnets...it may depend on the time of season you go but
in the northern areas (Michigan where I live) and Minnesota biting insects
can be a problem in June. We were definitely glad we took our nets. It is
true that you are tired and don't stay up late but a little relaxing time
in the evening is nice.
I agree on Philmont...Late July and into August, I'm not sure we even saw a
bug.
