I have seen two --- one large one on the trail from New Abreu to Urraca Mesa in 1992 and a very small one near the end of Bear Canyon just before the tunnel to get to the Cimmaron River in 2000. The large one was moving away from us so fast that I was bearly able to get a picture.

At Ponil, I woke up in the morning & went out to "salt a rock" as we called it. The rattler that had chosen my rock to sun himself, seemed much larger than he probably was. All I could think of was the punch-line to the old joke "You're gonna die man", as I zipped myself back up, & backed away as slowly (& quickly) as possible. Fortunately, I didn't startle him & he was cooperative enough to stay put long enough for all our boys to view from a distance.

Rick (a good ol' buffalo too)
