How many of the Powermax xpert fuel bottles did you use on the trail?

Were the Powermax readily available at the trail commissaries?

Thanks
Chuck

We had a light crew in 2001 so we cut weight by only carrying 2 stoves (Peak
with the fuel tank under) and 2 qt. fuel bottles. That was more than
adequate. In 2003 we carried 3 powermax xpert stoves and rarely used more
than 1. I see no purpose in carrying 3 stoves. The way the food is now you
can easily get by with one stove if one of the two you are carrying fails.

Subject: [Philmont]: Stoves

On our 2002 trek, we brought 3 Whisperlight stoves, 3 smaller fuel bottles
and 2 large fuel bottles (for 12 people). We NEVER used the third stove,
never even took it out of the bag. We RARELY used the second stove (we
used the boiling bag method and cooked all meals together in one large
pot). We also had way too much fuel, considering that we could refill at
our 2 commissary stops. We also had no real stove problems, other than a
slightly clogged jet on the last day which I cleaned easily.

My question to the list, we are discussing leaving the third stove and 1
each of the fuel bottles at home this year to save some crew gear weight
(going with 2 stoves and 3 fuel bottles). We have a lighter weight crew
this time around and are trying to shed weight where ever possible. The
reasoning, we have never had a stove issue we couldn't fix via field
maintenance and in a pinch, we could survive on 1 stove. In a real pinch,
we would end up getting some staff help OR just hydrating the food without
heating the water (still treated, of course). What is the list's thoughts
on this approach? What are the realistic chances that BOTH stoves would
poop out? We have backpacking and camped with them numerous times and
NEVER had a real problem. My SVEA is almost 30 years old, has been used
100's of times at a variety of altitudes and conditions, and I have NEVER
encountered a problem I couldn't correct via field maintenance. I would
anticipate the Whisperlights to be similar in their reliability? Thanks.

YIS.
