> I learned through this list and Wally's guide that coffee is distributed during the first night before the trek begins.
>
> Could someone provide a bit more detail on the specific form of coffee distributed? More to my interest, is the coffee for the advisors in the form of the ever-popular tea-bag packets or something else (just the grinds)?
COMMENT: In 2003, the Advisors had access to Nescafe instant coffee in individual packets. Nothing special, but it is coffee. Beats a boiled sock. It was given away free at the Advisor's orientation meeting our first evening at Base Camp.
How many coffee packets are available for each advisor?
COMMENT: You were encouraged to take "just enough" for your own use on your trek. Honor principle. Nobody was counting.
Would you recommend that coffee drinkers bring their own supply or is Philmont's supply and quality adequate?
COMMENT: If quality is an issue with you, bring your own.
I'm also looking for the wisdom of the group on previous experiences with cream and sweetener.
COMMENT: I have no experience with them at Philmont, since I drink my coffee black.
How have you handled these in the past? Understanding the smellable factor, I suspect that these luxuries need to be treated carefully.
> I would be interested in the coffee supply containers pholks have used in the past during their trek too. Please advise.
>
COMMENT: I took only the individual packets offered free at Philmont Base Camp. Stored 'em in with my personal items that went to the bear bag at night. Easy to dispose of wrapper in the crew's daily compacted trash. I did NOT choose to drink coffee every morning because our crew did not choose to cook breakfast most days, and that instant stuff is pretty bad! An older scout and I occasionally fired up stoves for a quick cup of hot coffee before we hit the trail. The other 9 in our crew did not drink coffee at all. I brought back some of the packets I took. I normally drink decaf anyway, so I didn't need a caffinated kick to get me going each day.
On an aside: I didn't use vitamins "A" (advil) or "I" (ibuprofin); although many advisors swear by them. I did take a supply of my daily multivitamins.
