In 2002 the coffee was offered at the advisor's meeting on our first
evening at Philmont. There was quite a dash for it after the meeting
was adjourned. It was instant coffee in packets. I believe both
caffeinated and decaf were available. I can't remember if creamer and
sweetener were available. We kept our coffee supply in the "Opps" bag,
so we could get to it without dropping the main bear bags. The advisors
generally had time to make it while the crew was waking up, packing up,
etc.
We saw two bears as we broke camp on Mt. Phillips. On this day no one
had thought about coffee or a hot breakfast. We stood by the fire ring
in a large group and tried to look "big" while the second bear gave our
sump and kitchen utensils a close inspection. The bear found nothing of
interest, stared at us for a bit, and then sauntered off in search of
food. We might have seen even more wildlife if we had be offering hot
coffee that morning.
We usually hiked for 30min or an hour and ate breakfast at our first
packs off break.
