RE: [Philmont]: Coffee

In 2002, I brought my own instant. I find the pre-package instant to make
the coffee too strong for me (and I don't like carrying the partial packs
around) and the coffee "tea bags" generate too much messy trash. I brought
a small plastic bottle filled it with instant. I also use Equal to take
the bitter edge off <g>, so I brought the Equal "pill" dispenser as well.
This also came in handy for the "yummy" staff coffee when sweetening was
usually sugar, when sweetening was found at all. Unlike true coffee
aficionados (or are the addicts? <g>), I didn't have more than 1 cup per
day and only on the days when we had left-over water from hot breakfast.
But I do have to say, even instant coffee was appreciated! YIS. Mike

To the advice you've received, I can only add (from painful personal
experience) that a coffee drinker should be in charge of your crew's coffee
supply. Otherwise, the elixer of life might get tossed out with the yumyum
bag on, say, the third day of your trek. And then your only caffeine supply
would be the black sludge that backcountry staffers filter through used
sponges and dirty hiking socks.
