Paul--

Other people will have other favorites, but there are several good books about Philmont and the history of the area that are usually available in the trading post and/ or the Seton Museum.

Philmont, A History of New Mexico's Cimarron Country by Lawrence R. Murphy is a probably the definitive history of the area. Murphy was a former Phil-staffer and a history professor.

High Adventure Among the Magic Mountains, Philmont: The First 50 Years is by Minor Huffman, who was Philmont's general manager from 1943 to 1947. He has some interesting stories to tell.

For Good or Bad, People of the Cimarron Country has stories of Lucien Maxwell, Kit Carson, Charlie Kennedy, Clay Allison, etc. and is edited by Stephen Zimmer, who retired a couple of years ago as Philmont's director of museums.

Beyond the Hills: The Journey of Waite Phillips by Michael Wallis is a bit uncritical, but an interesting biography.

The downside: Most of these are kind of bulky and heavy.
