This is where the crew leader comes in. Hope you have a strong one...and an
assistant. The old "scout spirit" issue is a hard sell if it's not part of
everyday troop life. I am making the assumption the crew in question is a
"troop or crew" crew. If a council crew, that probably would be a bigger
challenge. I have no experience with council contingents.

Expectations should be laid out well in advance of May 2004 for a summer 2004
trek.

In our crew, we had a few "individuals." The crew leader and I made a
special effort to meet with those "individuals" and their families in their homes,
in private, to be sure we all were on the same page before we left on our trek.
Those meetings were very helpful and defused much of the impulsiveness. Not
to say there wasn't any, but it was generally manageable. The crew took care
of managing itself once on the trail and off the trail. We traveled in Class
B -- bright red crew T-shirts, easy to see in airports. Class A on arrival,
at religious services and campfires in Base Camp. Leave Class As in the
locker while you're on the trail.

Good luck and have fun.

RE: "I'm getting some push back from some of the boys"
I've met these boys! They're the same boys who take chocolate bars into
their sleeping bags, because they've learned somewhere along the line that
the rules don't apply to them. Unfortunately, if they're still whining
about uniforms by the time they're old enough to go to Philmont, it's no use
fighting this battle -- the fact that they think they have a choice says it
all. Just let them know that it might be better for crew morale if they
dropped out now.
