As a Welcome Center staff member, I can tell you that sharp crews arrive and
depart in uniform, either in Class A or some variation of crew/ contingent
shirts and Scout shorts.
It will feel right to your crew once they get there. In fact, when they
look at the other crews arriving with them, they may feel a little let down
if they're not in uniform. I think wearing the uniform probably does set
the expectation for arriving crews that Philmont isn't just another place to
go-- it's a place to expect the highest standards for your crew. It's also
a place that wouldn't exist except for one man who believed so strongly in
what Scouting had to offer, uniforms and all, that he donated the whole
place not just to the "Boy Scouts," but to your crew.
Crews are asked to be in Class A uniform for the opening and closing
campfires. They have the option for their crew picture. Those are the only
times it is mandatory or formally requested. You might also ask your crew
to watch for staff members in full uniform. Most of them will be
conservation staff-- arguably the toughest people on the ranch, trail
building and all that... -- and they make it a point of pride to be in Class
A whenever they're in base camp. Nearly every staff member you'll see is an
Eagle, too.
