I'd definitely vote against taking the radios on the trail. If your crew
gets separated, a passing ranger will rather insistently reunite you. Of
course, you may at times have people go off to program activities while
others stay in camp, but I don't see any need for long-distance
communication in those cases. And if you're talking about FRS radios, I'm
not sure you'd be able to reach each other anyway over much distance with a
mountain or two in the way.
As for using them en route, I'd be okay with that as long as they're used
for legitimate purposes not just playing. (When our troop travels with
radios, I usually get to about the next county before I turn mine off to
avoid the chatter. However, that mostly comes from boys much younger than
Philmont age.)
