Actually, I disagree. As a GPS advocate, I would say that there is very
little real overlap between what a map and compass are used for at Philmont
and what a GPS is typically used for. Stand still with a GPS and have it
tell you which way North is. It is a powerful tool when used in conjunction
with a map and compass, or in the hands of someone who really understands
it. Put it in the hands of an untrained scout in the place of a map and
compass? They are going to get lost.

Alternatively, bringing a GPS and taking the opportunity at Philmont to
teach the crew how it works and what it can do, and you now have scouts that
understand UTM or Lat/Lon and their usefulness on maps. Not to mention a
real cool record of EXACTLY where they have been.
