Using a GPS you can project waypoints based on bearing and distance, then
follow the projection lines just as you would do with a compass. You could
waypoint a camp, do a "go to" on the waypoint, giving you the bearing and
distance also. Just a few other uses of a gps.

Well, maybe within 30 meters or so, anyway :-)

I use a GPS. I do geocaching. I think that would be a really
cool activity for Philmont to have available for crews.
GPS is a great tool for verifying your map and compass work, as
once you go somewhere, see if your GPS says you are at the same
place you thought your map and compass got you to. It's also
a good way to find out if you are taking accurate bearings.
Some scouts have a bit of a problem taking bearings, and with
the GPS you can show them in a way that is undeniable that they
were off some degrees.

It also makes a great tool to be able to see how much difference
in distance following a trial makes versus a straight line :-).

HOwever, a GPS cannot tell you which direction a bearing is in
unless you are moving. THe compass is much better for that.
A GPS is not much good for orienting a map and getting a lay of
 the land for bushwacking.

If only used to mark some waypoints, it's just a toy. But then,
that is what they said about backpacking stoves when you could
still cook over an open fire.
