I learned in 1971 to stop & regroup:
- at every junction on the trail,
- at every saddle (I think Easterners call them notches or gaps)
- at every stream crossing (including dry ones, since the stream itself can look like a trail)
- and every 30 minutes.
The purpose of regrouping is to: assess the health of all members, verify trail and orientation, promulgate a new safety bearing, and pose for photos.
