Problem Crews:
1. Have the boys set their code of conduct before the trek. Determine ahead
of time what are their expectations and what discipline will be enforced.
2. Have all the crew members( adult advisors included) sign the code of
conduct document before you go. Give a copy to the parents.
3. Let the parents know up front that if their is a serious breach of the
code of conduct, ( example stealing) the boy will be sent home at the parents
expense. This should be spelled out in #2.
4. Do not threaten discipline and not follow thru. If you have a crew member
problem you owe it to the crew to resolve the problem, and if necessary send
the offender home. ( adult advisors included).
5. If you feel you may have a problem scout or adult advisor attending, have
a Scoutmaster Conference with the individual ( well before the trip) and
spell out clear, and if needed written expectations. Scoutmaster conferences can
be held even though there is no rank advancement involved.
6. Have the boys and adult advisors know about the line in the sand rule- The
CREW stays together.
I believe you will find that the boys will come up with a stricter code that
the adults.
If you are not a fully boy run troop this is a good start in that direction.
Sending a boy or adult home should be a decision made by the adult advisors.
All crews may not need a written code, but some crews may benefit.
The Scout Oath and Law are our blueprint.
I stress to our guys the following You are members of Scout Troop 284,
Trailhead District, Heart of America Council, Boy Scouts of America. When we
travel, and out in the public we will be seen as the last part , Boy Scouts of
Amercia. Do not bring dis-honor to the BSA. People will judge you by your actions
and hence judge the BSA. Be on your honor, I expect you to up-hold and bring
additional honor to the BSA. This should be easy for each of you to do. I
have confidence, and trust you will not break, this trust I have in you.
