Many years ago one of my mentors in Scouting and in high adventure
expeditions such as Philmont gave me these words of wisdom when I was
confronted with a problem Scout "I do not take problems on the trail." His
words sound harsh, but they are not meant to be interpreted to the letter.
There are certain less severe problems that are knowingly dealt with by
advisors and crew members. These words of wisdom are meant to encourage
advisors and crew members to make the hard decisions at home during training
hikes and meetings before they are confronted on the trail. One crew member
who is a continuing threat to the health and safety of himself and others
can ruin a once in a lifetime experience for the other crew members. If the
attention and energy of the advisors and crew members is being directed
toward ensuring that one individual is not harming himself or others, the
Philmont experience becomes a memorable for the wrong reasons.
