RE: [Philmont]: Wilderness First Aid

I had a boy fall down the North side of Baldy. Took 3 crews, and 3
rangers to haul him out in a hail storm. Glad I had that emergency
blanket. Great expedient stretcher.

SOAP notes are as critical as anything in my first aid kit.

Subject: [Philmont]: Wilderness First Aid

Hi:
The Red Cross has an excellent Wilderness First Aid class. A couple
of us
Scouters in the Tidewater area just completed the class and highly
recommend
it.

We're planning a 2-3 hour wilderness first aid training session for
the
council contingent. It will be another good forum to emphasize team
work
and logical problem solving. Any suggestions on topics to cover?

>From you experienced Philmont trekkers out there, what are some of
the
medical emergencies that you've encountered at Philmont? Have your
crew
first aid kits been adequate for the job or were there items that
you've
added? Any items in the first aid kit that you've never used and
plan to
remove?

The Philmont guidebook says most injuries happen at the end of the
day while
in camp for the evening. That's probably consistent with the old
rule of
thumb that 80% of sports injuries occur during the last 20% of the
game.

Thanks much,
Mick Meyer
