In 2003, Philmont introduced a new youth crew leadership position
(Chaplain Aide) and asked each crew attending to select a youth Chaplain
Aide prior to arrival at Philmont.
Philmont also implemented a Duty to God Program which is described in the
back of the Eagles Soaring High devotional booklet which outlines a daily
trail worship program for Christians, Muslims and Jews. Youth and adult
crew members were eligible to participate and earn a special patch which
could be purchased at the Tooth of Time Traders at the end of their trek.
According to a conversation I had with one of the Philmont Chaplains last
July, the implementation of the Chaplain Aide position and the Duty to God
Program helped to significantly reduce the number of backcountry calls to
which Philmont Chaplains had to respond in order to quell crew conflicts
and address individual "problems".
