Calvin H. Gray says,

"In 2003, Philmont introduced a new youth crew leadership position (Chaplain
Aide) and asked each crew attending to select a youth Chaplain Aide prior to
arrival at Philmont.

"Philmont also implemented a Duty to God Program which is described in the
back of the Eagles Soaring High devotional booklet which outlines a daily
trail worship program for Christians, Muslims and Jews. Youth and adult
crew members were eligible to participate and earn a special patch which
could be purchased at the Tooth of Time Traders at the end of their trek.

"According to a conversation I had with one of the Philmont Chaplains last
July, the implementation of the Chaplain Aide position and the Duty to God
Program helped to significantly reduce the number of backcountry calls to
which Philmont Chaplains had to respond in order to quell crew conflicts and
address individual 'problems'."

Our crew combined the Duty to God Program and Thorns, Roses and Buds into an
effective activity. We did the daily program from "Eagles Soaring High" and
followed with Thorns, Roses and Buds. This activity took 20 to 30 minutes
each evening. The daily exercise strengthened our crew. (All crew members
earned the Duty to God patch.)

Not only did our crew become closer, but the guys decided that they wanted
to change how our troop was run. So, they came back and got their candidate
elected as SPL. Many other crew members served in leadership positions.
After the first SPL's term expired, a second crew member was elected SPL.

These were great guys to start with. "Eagles Soaring High" / Thorns, Roses
and Buds made them a great crew. I highly recommend taking the time to do it
daily!
