[Philmont]: Open Crew Slot

Expedition 617-O, from Troop 142 of Decatur, AL,
invites any interested, qualified scout to contact us
to fill an open slot in our 2004 Philmont Crew.

Please pass this opportunity on to any scouts that you
know who might be interested.

Our crew has 8 highly qualified scouts and three
scouters, with the 12th slot available. This
opportunity arises because a member of the crew has
had to cancel. It is possible that a second opening
may develop, so if you would go only if you can bring
a buddy, please contact us.

We depart Decatur on June 14, arrive at Philmont on
June 17, depart Philmont on June 29, and return to
Decatur by July 1.

Our trek itinerary is #16, which is in the South &
Central areas of Philmont classified Rugged, with a
total distance of 63 Miles, and a maximum elevation of
11,777 Feet. Program opportunities include rock
climbing, lumber jacking, fly tying & fishing,
homesteading, western lore, and much more. You can

The cost is $600, which includes the Philmont fee,
travel from Decatur, and two crew t-shirts. As you
know may know, this is a VERY low fee.

The crew's remaining warmup trips are May 21-23
(Prentice Cooper State Forest near Chattanooga, TN)
and May 28-31 (Pinhoti Trail near Gadsden, AL). We
would very much prefer someone who could participate
on one of these warmup trips, but will accept any
qualified scout.

To be qualified, a scout must be participants must be
at least 14 years old on of before January 1, 2004 or
have completed 8th grade before participating, and
meet the Philmont weight requirements. All
participants must complete a BSA Philmont physical
form before attending. You will also need
confirmation from your scoutmaster that you are
qualified mentally and physically for this challenge.
