[Philmont]: bugs?

How bad are the bugs? I've heard they didn't used to be bad but that lately, certain camps have seen quite an increase. Deet seems to be a major and effective ingredient in most lotions. My concern is that deet also does not "play" well with certain fabrics. Some of those same fabrics are also used in high tech clothing, ie. coolmax type, etc. Any experiences with this situation?
