We didn't have any problems with bugs in 2001. In 2003 we heard all sorts of horror stories about bugs before our trek in late July. However the only problem we had was at Crater Lake where we were inundated with flies during the afternoon, the flies seemed to leave just as quickly as they came and we didn't see them again. Later that trek we had a small problem with mosquitos at Wild Horse other than that no problems at all. Happy hiking.

How bad are the bugs? I've heard they didn't used to be bad but that lately, certain camps have seen quite an increase. Deet seems to be a major and effective ingredient in most lotions. My concern is that deet also does not "play" well with certain fabrics. Some of those same fabrics are also used in high tech clothing, ie. coolmax type, etc. Any experiences with this situation?
