We were there in June 2003 and had a lot of cool, rainy weather. The
mosquitos were the worst I've ever seen (and I'm from Minnnesota!). When it
was sunny, we had flies that drove us to our tents, but only on certain
days. There seemed to be no pattern. As for DEET, we didn't have any, as we
thought there were no bugs at Philmont!
However, we use DEET at home, and it works quite well on mosquitos, but not
on flies. I wear a lot of CoolMax and other hi-tech synthetic materials
while camping and haven't noticed a problem, although I could just be
lucky. Maybe there is a chemist out there who can explain what could
happen.
